The Fächermann, or Compartment Man, was designed in 1977 by Susi and Ueli Berger for the Röthlisberger woodworking shop in Switzerland.

It consists of 34 compartments in different sizes and depth, and made of black lacquered wood. Our version has been fitted with two light bulbs as was originally intended, according to the notes by the designers, which are kept in the archives of the Museum for Gestaltung (Zurich).

We have confirmed with Röthlisberger that less than 20 pieces were ever produced of this exact model, making it a true limited edition collector’s item.

Origination: Switzerland 1980s, from private collection.
